No matter what you do or where you are when the game ends, you cannot change how the story turns out.
To start, you choose which of your characters sets off on their own journey first. If you want your character to become a hero, give them a noble and diplomatic personality. This is absolutely essential. That trait will always guide the character's priorities and set the direction as you move through the game.
Would you rather play a polite and obedient overlord, a courteous and obedient maiden, or a hungry and disloyal underling? (dictator, societal antagonist) In most cases, the choices you make will decide how the game ends. Once you take control of one character, the artificial intelligence takes over the other, and the story begins.
