Description
ZAO (deepfake) — Neural networks have streamlined video editing work significantly, and ZAO demonstrates this by leveraging advanced computer algorithms. This deepfake application lets you seamlessly superimpose your face onto any scene from Hollywood films without needing to understand complex video production techniques. However, the app has proven controversial with some users.
ZAO climbed to the top of both the Chinese App Store and Android charts within just 48 hours. Momo, the company behind the app and operator of one of China's most popular dating streaming platforms, integrated cutting-edge deepfake technology that swaps a character's face with another in mere seconds—a process that previously demanded several hours of manual algorithm training.
Despite its rapid rise, Bloomberg raised security concerns about the app, citing its privacy terms which permit Momo to repurpose generated videos for internal use. The developers maintain this clause is standard practice, explaining that such data collection supports ongoing neural network improvement.
