Wild Space is quite selective about its players. If you don't particularly enjoy strategy games, resource gathering, or sci-fi space themes, you may find it a bit hard to get into.

Background

Earth in the distant future has been drained dry. Energy and resources have run out, and humanity could face extinction at any moment. The most urgent task now is to find an abundant alternative energy source that can restore the planet's surface and meet basic human needs.

A special campaign has been launched. Astronauts, technicians, and engineers are being sent to several planets that earlier long-range research identified as feasible and relatively safe. This team of experts is tasked with studying new mineral resources and finding ways to exploit them. Their ultimate mission is to build a new energy research outpost that can replace Earth's depleted reserves.

Survey the surface and locate resources

In Wild Space, your mission is to travel to alien planets beyond Earth in search of life. If there is no living creature or sign of life, you will officially become the first person to set foot on that world.

You start by scanning a strange planet for signs of life. If life exists, hunt it down and find out what lives there. Ideally, though, you'll find a planet that has never been touched by life. All the land here becomes yours, and you can freely exploit, operate, and build on it.

A strange planet is always rich in resources, both useful and dangerous. Next, use probes to dig deep into various spots on the surface and look for signs of valuable deposits. Once you have the report on the surface structure and the names of the resources and minerals found there, you move on to the next stage: resource extraction.

Mining is possible with many types of machines, but first try your hand at the simple equipment you already have. From here, you bring basic resources back to the base, process them into raw materials, and use those materials to build more advanced mining machines.

These new machines are deployed to the surface to exploit rarer resources. As mining operations grow busier, efficiency keeps climbing.

Building a power station

Once you have substantial resources, your next job is to build outposts. The planet's surface map is laid out as a grid of hexagons. Use your existing resources to build factories, add machines, lay reinforced concrete surfaces, and shape the next locations to build on. Each time you add a function room, mining plant, storage system, or warehouse, you simply fill a hexagon with the shape of the newly built infrastructure.

The ultimate goal is to create a large outpost focused on exploiting the planet's resources, becoming a research center for generating energy for the whole world. The bigger the outpost, the stronger your mining capacity, and the more opportunities scientific and technological research has to advance rapidly. Energy production then ramps up steadily until you can almost supply a new energy source to Earth, which is severely depleted.

Throughout the game, make good use of Explorer booster items. They speed up your exploration of the planet, and they also shorten the time needed to complete the outpost's infrastructure.

Construction strategy

With the planet's mineral deposits mapped out, you need to set up a suitable system in the right location. Consider the distance from the future outpost to the main mining areas, and watch out for obstacles in the terrain. Hexagonal cells within the same system also need a certain continuity to maximize the effectiveness of the entire energy network.

Also prepare for the challenges this alien world can throw at you. Natural disasters and galactic storms can strike at any time and wipe out an unfinished project. Build storm-resistant boundaries, and make the roof and ceiling as sturdy as possible. Keep each zone's activities separate so you can cut away damaged sections when necessary.

Every one of these decisions reflects a player's tactical mind and long-term construction vision.
