Description
Wii Controller IME: many of you have probably already come across the great retro console emulators on Google Play. They can multiply the number of games on your devices many times over, but playing them on a touchscreen is rather awkward. Missing physical buttons? This guide shows you how to hook up a PS3 or Xbox controller to your Android device. If you happen to own a Nintendo Wii, you'll also learn how to pair the Wii Remote with your Android phone.
Step 1: Find the Wii Remote. If the controller isn't in its usual spot, ask your grandmother. Maybe she'll lend you hers.
Step 2: Download the app. The Wii Controller IME app is available for a modest price of a couple of dollars.
Please note: this app won't work on HTC smartphones running the Sense UI. Sorry about that.
Step 3: Set up the app. The first time you open Wii Controller IME, it will show a warning about needing to make changes. Just tap OK, and you'll be taken to a menu where you need to allow Wii Controller IME to be added as an extra keyboard layout. Don't worry, this is exactly how it's supposed to work.
Step 4: Connect the Wii Remote. On the on-screen keyboard, tap the language selection icon. One of the options will be Wii Controller, so select it. Keep in mind that once you're done gaming, you'll need to switch back the same way, or you won't be able to type anything.
Now press and hold buttons 1 and 2 on the Wii Remote. The controller will enter search mode, and the Wii Controller IME app will happily confirm once the connection is established.
Step 5: Play with the Wii Remote. Every retro console emulator supports Bluetooth, so you can remap the buttons to suit your taste or keep the default layout. On one of the most popular emulators, the straightforwardly named Gensoid Yongzh, you'll need to enable Bluetooth support by opening the menu and ticking the "Use input method" option in the settings.
The developer of Wii Controller IME has promised to add support for the Wii Classic Controller to the app soon.
Step 6: Wondering why you'd bother?. Fair question. For one, it's far more comfortable than touch controls. And for another, it's just plain fun. As any tinkerer would say when asked "why?": because I can! The author recalls, with a smile, hooking up a portable PSP to a laptop so the image could be shown on a monitor, which was then sent to a plasma TV, while the controls came from a DUALSHOCK 3 controller linked to the laptop. All of this started with one goal: playing Pokemon on a Game Boy emulator.
