Tomodachi Life is a digital world and life simulator from the studio RaccunPushing that playfully blurs the line between everyday routine and surrealism for the sake of humor and social experiments. At its core, you manage an island filled with virtual "copies" of your friends, celebrities, or favorite book and anime characters, all in the Mii format. The developers built a clever interaction system in which characters fall in love, bicker, sing ridiculous songs, and share strange thoughts. The setting feels like a dollhouse, yet its local "actors" have no intention of becoming your puppets. Quite the opposite: nobody needs a babysitter here. The virtual residents handle their own problems, shape their lives, and make their own plans without unnecessary hassle.
Features
The core gameplay only asks you to take care of a few everyday and emotional needs of your virtual residents. Now and then, your routine involves smoothing over conflicts, planning leisure time, and listening to someone's stories. Customization is fully supported, too: you can set unique voices and character traits, pick wardrobes, and decorate rooms in the most unimaginable styles.
As the island grows, you unlock new facilities such as concert halls, cafes, fountains, and amusement parks. A news feature also reports funny stories about recent events in the Mii characters' lives, giving everything the feel of a reality show. Alongside the daily routine, you'll find mini-games and holiday events where you can earn exclusive rewards for your collection.
Pros
- Distinctive humor and total unpredictability in character behavior that completely changes how you see the genre;
- A powerful character editor and speech synthesis that bring any real-life acquaintance to life on screen;
- A relaxing atmosphere free from the usual patterns of entertainment worlds that force you to follow strict rules or chase specific goals.
Cons
- Some mechanics become repetitive over time, and occasional issues appear when using the customization options.
Final score: 9.1/10. Tomodachi Life is a clever, fun social experiment that turns running a virtual island into an endless TV series. Rarely has a fictional world tested your skills at reconciling quarreling friends and building a harmonious, or wonderfully chaotic, society quite like this.
