Ad Blocking

SmartTubeNext shows no ad banners, pre-roll ads, or mid-roll ad breaks. Rather than merely trying to block them, it is built so it cannot display ads at all, leaving no room for YouTube to slip anything in. As a result, you cannot allow ads or whitelist channels. Some creators include sponsored segments inside their videos, and these can be skipped too, as explained under SponsorBlock below.

SponsorBlock

SmartTubeNext includes SponsorBlock integration. According to the SponsorBlock website:

SponsorBlock is an open-source, crowdsourced browser extension and open API that skips sponsor segments in YouTube videos. […] the extension automatically skips known sponsors using a privacy-preserving query system. It also supports skipping other categories, such as intros, outros, and reminders to subscribe [and non-music sections in music videos].

You can choose which categories to skip in the settings. Unlike the browser add-on, SmartTubeNext does not let you submit new segments, since TVs and TV remotes aren't well suited to such precise operations.

Casting

To cast videos from your phone (or other devices), you need to link that device to your TV. Unlike the original YouTube app, SmartTubeNext doesn't appear automatically when both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network. How to link your smartphone and TV:

1. Open SmartTubeNext and go to settings
2. Go to "link devices" (the second option)
3. Open the YouTube app on your phone, then go to settings > watch on TV
4. Tap connect using TV code and enter the code shown on your TV

Picture-in-Picture (PiP)

SmartTubeNext can play videos in Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode. To use it, turn on Settings > General > Background playback > Picture in picture. Once enabled, pressing Home during playback will switch the video into PiP mode. You can also have Back trigger PiP by enabling it under Settings > General > Background playback (activation).

Adjust Speed

To change playback speed, tap the speed indicator (gauge icon) in the top row of the player. SmartTubeNext remembers your chosen speed for future videos. Keep in mind that some speeds may cause dropped frames, which is a known issue.

Voice Search

To enable global voice search, you need to install an extra companion app alongside SmartTubeNext. This bridge app intercepts the system's attempts to open the original YouTube app and launches SmartTubeNext instead, which means the original YouTube app has to be uninstalled first. You can always reinstall it later if you change your mind. The bridge app won't appear in your launcher and can't be opened directly, since it only works in the background for system voice search. On some devices, you may need to say "YouTube" explicitly in your query (for example, "YouTube cute cats" instead of just "cute cats").

On Amazon Fire TV, follow these steps to enable voice search support:

1. Uninstall the original YouTube app (root is not required on an Amazon Fire TV Stick).
2. Download and install the Amazon Bridge SmartTubeNext app from _https://kutt.it/stn_bridge_amazon (for example, using Downloader for AFTVnews).

On all other Android devices, root access is required to enable this feature:

1. Root your device (look for a guide specific to your model).
2. Uninstall the official YouTube app using root with the ADB shell command: pm uninstall com.google.android.youtube.tv
3. Download and install the ATV Bridge SmartTubeNext app from _https://kutt.it/stn_bridge_atv (for example, using Downloader for AFTVnews).
