The Story
The plot unfolds inside a laboratory where slimes are produced. You play as a green slime with a range of unusual abilities. The moment you're ejected from your test tube, you can stretch, squash, and eventually jump to solve physics-based puzzles. Your goal is to beat every trap and enemy, gather enough data discs, and win your freedom from the lab.
What makes this game special is the number of secrets hidden among the floppy disks you collect, and the story can wrap up in several different endings.
I haven't had the chance to recap every part of the Slime Labs series. Still, much like classic platformers with simple storylines, the tale of the colored slime in Slime Labs 3 hints at darker themes beneath the surface.
Where did the slime come from? Who created it, and for what purpose? Why can this slime think and regulate its own mind? Why is the lab hidden inside a spaceship? Are these creations purely human work, or is some other alien force involved? Is the real aim to use these clever slimes for something shady and ambitious?
Every one of these questions has to wait until the end of the game, or at least until you've replayed enough to piece together more clues.
First, though, you'll want to enjoy everything the flexible gameplay has to offer.
Gameplay
Your slime is remarkably versatile, yet the control scheme is fairly simple and feels familiar to anyone who's played a platformer. Two buttons in the lower-left corner move you left and right, while the action buttons in the lower-right corner let you jump and crouch by stretching your body.
Beyond the main objective of collecting hidden data discs in each level, you also gather bits of gelatin that drop from the pipes overhead and merge into your slime's body. The more gelatin you collect, the larger your slime grows. A bigger slime jumps higher but also moves more clumsily. Squeezing through narrow gaps is the real challenge, since each squeeze costs you gelatin. An unexpected collision, such as hitting a wall while mid-jump, can also strip away gelatin, or worse, chop you into hundreds of pieces and freeze you in place, sending you back to the start of the scene.
Keep an eye out for trap zones where the lab's surfaces release a cold mist that freezes you. It doesn't last long, but it's dangerous: while frozen you can't move, and if an enemy attacks at that moment, it's game over.
What makes Slime Labs 3 fun is that each level typically lasts only about one to two minutes, a bit longer if the trap-filled environment proves tricky. Every level hides around three discs, and later stages hold even more. They're always tucked away in hard-to-reach spots. Gather as many as you can, and by the end you'll be able to decode the countless secrets of this strange laboratory.
Retro-Inspired Graphics
The visuals aren't flashy, but Slime Labs 3 is a high-quality platformer when it comes to gameplay, character agility, and level design. Another highlight is the game's graphics and sound.
Slime Labs 3 uses soft, minimalist pixel art with polished colors that stay true to classic 16-bit style without looking overly blocky. Although the setting appears dry and sterile, every trap is carefully detailed so you can always tell how to get past it, even if executing that takes some skill.
The soundtrack is lively yet slightly dark, and some scenes build tension, especially when you approach difficult traps. The audio may not be as dazzling as the visuals, but it adds a lot to the atmosphere and makes you want to keep playing.

Admittedly, the game won't suit anyone looking for something flashy and modern. But fans of retro games, like me, will happily lose many hours to it. If you simply want to have fun and find creative inspiration, Slime Labs 3 offers plenty of platforming ideas that make it a compelling choice.
