SAMURAI SHODOWN ZERO ACA NEOGEO is the 5th installment of the 2D samurai fighting game, introducing a fresh cast of characters led by the new protagonist Yoshitora Tokugawa.

The Consecutive Slash System from Amakusa Kourin’ has been dropped in favor of the Kenki gauge, creating a system built around heavy hits that honors the series’ origins. The highlight is that weapon-flying special move commands have been unified, making each character’s special moves much easier to perform. Born from the beloved Zero series, this gem lets you fight the true Samsupi way!

The controls follow the style of the first generation and “Shin”: A is a weak slash, B a medium slash, and pressing A and B together delivers a strong slash. C handles kicks, D triggers special actions, and many moves can be chained with directional inputs. The rage gauge and the “Rage Explosion” triggered by pressing A, B, and C simultaneously also carry over. The Kenki gauge, which will return in later series, changes your attack power depending on how full it is, as explained further below, so the game feels like a return to the origins, focusing less on continuous combos.

The “Shura/Rakshasa” system introduced in “Zankoro Musouken” has been removed, and most character techniques are consolidated in this title. Returning favorites such as Haohmaru, Nakoruru, Kazuki Kazama, and Sougetsu Kazama stand out, and new characters sharing the traits of Rasetsu fighters have joined the roster. The new fighters Rasetsumaru, Rela, Enja, and Suija are each designed to differ from the original characters. Command techniques are easier to execute, so the complex series now feels more approachable.

The Kenki gauge is directly tied to attack power, and the amount of the gauge determines how strong your attacks are. It drops when you attack and recovers when you hold back. When the gauge is at MAX, attack power receives a boost, and when the rage gauge is at MAX or a rage explosion occurs, the boost increases further. Rather than attacking recklessly, aim for a one-hit kill as in the original Samsupi.
