The game's universe is a kaleidoscope of alternate realities, where the laws of physics and logic shift from one level to the next. In one world the dead march in knightly armor, in another they have become cyborgs with laser eyes, and in a third they drift over the battlefield in pumpkin UFOs. The story centers on a mad professor who accidentally tore open portals between dimensions, leaving the player to clean up the mess his experiments created.
Your main goal is to defend your home (or its alternate versions: a castle, a space station, an underground bunker) against waves of the undead. To do so, you place flowers on a limited grid, taking into account their unique properties: some slow enemies, others explode, and still others raise barricades. There are no one-size-fits-all solutions, because the rules change in every universe. In the "magical" world, for example, sprouts need mana instead of sunlight, while in the "cyber" universe you must first hack the defense system to activate traps.
The gameplay demands careful tactical planning for every battle. You start by gathering resources through energy generators, then build defensive lines while anticipating the enemy's routes. Crazy Multiverse also has its surprises: sudden bosses, shifting landscapes, and weather effects such as blizzards and acid rain that alter how well your plants perform. Some missions switch to a "reverse invasion" mode, where you take control of the zombies to learn their tactics and spot their weak points.
The campaign features a branching storyline in which your choices shape the ending. There are also daily challenges with a restricted set of plants, and cooperative missions for two players.
