A monster's health bar is split into segments, and each time you reduce it below a segment threshold, you can summon an allied monster. Each ally can be summoned only once per battle and uses a special skill to assist you a single time. Once your summon opportunities are used up, further segment thresholds have no effect.

A monster is defeated when its health runs out, while you lose the battle if your spirit's health hits zero. Defeated monsters are added to your inventory. If you lose, the monster isn't captured and you must start the fight over. Some monsters relocate to a new spot after beating you, so you'll need to search for them again before challenging them.
