    Description

Microsoft Authenticator makes signing in to your online accounts quick and secure through multi-factor authentication, passwordless sign-in, or password autofill. It also gives you extra account management tools for your personal, work, or school Microsoft accounts.

Getting started with multi-factor authentication Multi-factor authentication (MFA), also known as two-factor authentication (2FA), adds a second layer of protection to your accounts. After you enter your password, you'll be asked for one more way to confirm it's really you. You can either approve the notification sent to Microsoft Authenticator or type in the one-time password (OTP) the app generates. Each one-time password (OTP) code counts down on a 30-second timer, so you never have to reuse the same time-based one-time password (TOTP) and there's no number to memorize. Generating codes doesn't require a network connection and won't drain your battery. You can add several accounts to the app, including non-Microsoft accounts such as Facebook, Amazon, Dropbox, Google, LinkedIn, GitHub, and more.

Getting started with passwordless sign-in Skip the password and log in to your Microsoft account with your phone. Simply enter your username, then approve the notification sent to your device. Your fingerprint, face ID, or PIN adds a second layer of security to this two-step verification. Once you've signed in with two-factor authentication (2FA), you'll have access to all your Microsoft products and services, including Outlook, OneDrive, Office, and more.

Getting started with autofill Microsoft Authenticator can also fill in your passwords automatically. Sign in to the Passwords tab inside the app with your personal Microsoft account to start syncing your passwords, including those saved in Microsoft Edge. Set Microsoft Authenticator as your default autofill provider and your passwords will be filled in automatically on the apps and sites you use on your phone. Your saved passwords are protected by multi-factor authentication within the app, so you'll need to confirm your identity with your fingerprint, face ID, or PIN before you can view or autofill them on your mobile device. You can also import passwords from Google Chrome and other password managers.

Microsoft personal, work, or school accounts Your workplace or school may ask you to install Microsoft Authenticator to access certain files, emails, or apps. To do this, you'll register your device with your organization through the app and add your work or school account. Microsoft Authenticator also supports certificate-based authentication by issuing a certificate to your device. This lets your organization confirm that a sign-in request is coming from a trusted device, so you can securely access additional Microsoft apps and services without logging in to each one separately. Because Microsoft Authenticator supports single sign-on, once you've verified your identity a single time, you won't need to log in again to other Microsoft apps on your device.

Optional access permissions: Microsoft Authenticator includes the following optional access permissions, all of which require your consent. If you decline them, you can still use Microsoft Authenticator for other services that don't need these permissions. For more information, see https://aka.ms/authappfaq Accessibility Service: Optionally used to enable Autofill on more apps and sites. Location: Sometimes your organization needs to verify your location before granting access to certain resources. The app requests this permission only if your organization has a policy that requires it. Camera: Used to scan QR codes when you add a work, school, or non-Microsoft account. Read the contents of your storage: Used only when you report a technical problem through the app settings. Some storage information is collected to help diagnose the issue.
