METAL SLUG 4 ACA NEOGEO is a side-scrolling action shooter where two new recruits set out to take down the terrorist organization "Amadeus." Marco and Fio lead the charge alongside newcomers Trevor and Nadia, while Tarma and Eli show up fighting right beside you. Many of the visuals are reused from earlier entries in the series, yet the richly detailed drawings and lively character animations still impress. The challenge is steep, but it's a fair kind of hard, one that rewards skill and you'll want to master.

A FAMILIAR SHOOTER WITH A NEW BUTTON FOR METAL ATTACKS!

The core controls remain the same as before: move with the joystick, then attack, jump, and toss grenades. Rather than pressing attack and jump together to trigger a Metal attack, a dedicated button now handles it, which keeps you from blowing yourself up by accident. The new "Twin Heavy Machine Guns" pack serious firepower, but their ammo runs out fast, so use them wisely. Each character handles differently in grenade range and melee attacks, so take time to find the one that suits your style.

EARN EVEN MORE WITH THE NEW "METAL SYSTEM"!

A new "Metal System" lets you earn medals based on the points scored within a set time after collecting the emblem (blue or gray). Clearing a stage pays out bonuses according to your medal count, letting you rake in more rewards than with prisoners alone. Like prisoners, medals reset when you die, so stay sharp.

The game has drawn criticism for reusing many graphics from earlier entries, but as 2D pixel art, its craftsmanship stands out against other titles. Enemies sport plenty of new designs and animations, and considering it was developed in a short span, the team clearly gave it their all.

It's a shame Tarma and Eli aren't playable, but they appear throughout as NPCs, fighting alongside you. Muneatsu's spirit of teamwork comes through clearly too, such as a rescued prisoner who turns up driving a vehicle.

Though it's known as a very tough game, enemy attacks that look unfair always come with a counter, and no stage can be won by luck alone. The balance means you're never left helpless. Still, there's no denying it remains very difficult.
