Built on a minimalist pixel art style, Lunatika can feel uneasy and a little uncomfortable if you're not used to it. But for players who have a soft spot for pixel art and indie horror games like this one, it promises an unforgettable interactive story experience.
About Lunatika
Step into a dark horror journey!
An adventure game blended with the horror genre
Maybe you sensed something unsettling about this game the first time you saw a screenshot or watched its short trailer. Exactly what that feeling is remains hard to pin down, until you actually play the game…
The story in Lunatika opens on a completely black screen. On it stands a white human figure made of square pixels, no bigger than the tip of a little finger. This neatly sparks curiosity while also creating a faint, haunting unease in the player.
You play as a writer who is currently unemployed and can't put pen to paper because your inspiration has vanished. You wander around your dull apartment, unsure what to do, when a knock comes at the door…
From that moment on, a string of strange events keeps unfolding, making you question everything around you. Even the small apartment you live in, once your tiniest and safest private corner of the world, starts to feel different. Even the neighbor you always considered harmless…
You become tangled in a series of tragic events that end with you being suspected of murder. Now even you can't believe it. At the moment someone accused you, you were still holding a knife in your hand.
And the scariest part? When you saw the bloody knife in your hand, your first reaction was strikingly calm, with no panic at all. You head to the bathroom, already thinking about how to clean the blade as thoroughly as possible and erase every trace that could point the finger at you.
The story takes an unexpected turn
By this point, the story in Lunatika is dark enough to push your imagination toward the most sinister scenarios. Strange sounds keep appearing inside and outside the apartment. You keep searching for the source of these disturbances, ready to lose your mind and hunt them down wherever they lead. Then you come face to face with a monster of enormous size.
Is this really happening, or is it just the imagination rising inside the character's head? And is that terrifying monster a dark side of the writer himself? Every bit of horror in this game arrives slowly and unhurriedly, yet it has the power to gnaw at your soul and wear down your mind, little by little. You may not expect that such a small game could leave you lost in thought for so long.
How to play Lunatika?
At its core, this is a story-driven adventure game built around interactive gameplay. There's not much to say about the mechanics; the story mostly guides you. The main screen is shown above, and below are two buttons that move your character left or right. You decide whether the character moves forward or backward.
Between these basic moves, situations keep arising that require you to give answers or pick more complex options. Read each option carefully and make your own call.
That's all there is to it. But you'll need to be careful with every move and decision, because one wrong choice can turn you into a real monster, while another can wake you from your coma and return you to normal life.
