Over the past few years, SNK has teamed up with Hamster Corporation to bring many of the original NEOGEO classics to modern devices through the ACA NEOGEO series. The challenge and visual style that defined NEOGEO games back then can now be recreated on your smartphone using screen and difficulty settings. Online features, including online ranking modes, are available too. Quick save/load and customizable virtual pad controls make the app even more enjoyable to play. Each team now consists of four fighters rather than the three-character squads found in earlier The King of Fighters (KOF) titles. Before every match, you pick three characters to battle with. The fourth member is the Striker, who you call into the fight mid-battle to help your character unleash one of their Special Moves on the opponent. Strikers can only be summoned a limited number of times per match, as shown by the "Strike Bombs" at the bottom of the screen.

The Advanced and Extra combat styles from The King of Fighters '98 have been removed. In their place, the game offers a single playing style based on the previous game's Advanced mode, where you fill your power gauge by attacking the opponent or performing special actions. Depending on the button combination you use, you can choose between two powered-up states during battle.

Counter Mode increases your offensive power and lets you use your character's Super Special Move without limit. You can also link a Special Move into a Super Special Move within a combo using a "Super Cancel Attack" or a "Moving Attack." The other enhanced state, Armor Mode, strengthens your character's defense so they can absorb more damage from the opponent, but Super Special Moves cannot be used while in Armor Mode.

At the end of each battle, you receive a score based on your performance. Earn a high enough score and arcade mode will grant you an extra fight after the final boss. This revised version of The King of Fighters: Evolution adds three new stages and two new characters who can only be used as Strikers.

Kyo Kusanagi (in alternate attire), Athena Asamiya (in her school uniform), Goro Daimon, Billy Kane, Ryuji Yamazaki, Chizuru Kagura, Syo Kirishima, Alfred Airhawk, Vanessa, Seth, Fiolina Germi, and Gai Tendo are the new Strikers. The game also works with the Neo Geo Pocket Color title The King of Fighters: Battle de Paradise. Points earned in Battle de Paradise can be transferred to The King of Fighters '99: Evolution to help Extra Strikers level up faster.
