Spite & Malice is a competitive patience game built for two players. Each player begins with five cards in hand, a pay-off pile of twenty cards, and four empty side stacks. Three empty center stacks sit in the middle of the table, alongside the stock pile that holds the rest of the deck. The goal is simple: be the first to clear your pay-off pile. Center stacks are built upward from the ace regardless of suit, so a round might begin with the ace of diamonds, followed by the two of spades, the three of hearts, and so on. Kings are wild: a king can be placed on any center stack and will take on whichever value is needed to continue the sequence. For example, if you play the king of spades on a ten of clubs, it becomes a queen. Once a center stack is completed, by playing a queen or king onto a jack, the entire stack is shuffled back into the stock pile. Any card may be placed on a side stack, no matter what is already there, but only the top card of each side stack can be used. At the start of each turn, you draw from the stock pile until your hand contains five cards again. During your turn, you may make several moves: play the top card of your pay-off pile to a center stack; play the top card of one of your side stacks to a center stack; play a card from your hand to a center stack; or play a card from your hand onto one of your side stacks. Placing a card on a side stack ends your turn. The game ends as soon as a player plays the last card from their pay-off pile onto a center stack. That player wins the round and scores one point for each card remaining in the opponent's pay-off pile. The round also ends if the stock pile runs out, resulting in a tie with no points awarded. The first player to reach 50 points wins the match!
