This Android application is well known in certain circles for scanning and intercepting web sessions. Its features make it possible to take over accounts even on an encrypted network (WPA2 only).

Overview

FaceNiff is built to intercept web sessions. To use it, you connect to a public Wi-Fi network, and the tool scans the shared access point to find sessions that can be intercepted.

The user picks a "victim" and, after a short wait, can already post messages from the "victim's" social network or forum account, place orders on websites, and carry out other unauthorized actions.

Features

The app relies on weaknesses in how traffic is transmitted. Only the login step, where the username and password are verified, is encrypted. After that, access to the account is maintained through standard tokens sent along with the website's cookies. The FaceNiff app can easily intercept these tokens, which allows it to take control of an account until the victim logs out or the cookie-based verification expires.

Most websites suffer from this problem, including well-known ones such as Facebook, Twitter, Amazon, VKontakte, Evernote, and Dropbox. The same goes for ordinary forums, small online stores, and user-generated platforms.
