Bhagavad Gita Overview
It lays out, in plain terms, the nature of consciousness and the bond between the self, the universe, and the divine. It captures the heart of India's spiritual wisdom. The Bhagavad Gita is regarded as part of the 5th Veda and is attributed to Vedavyasa, an ancient Indian sage. It also forms a portion of the great Indian epic, the Mahabharata. Lord Krishna first shared this teaching with Arjuna during the Battle of Kurukshetra.
Commonly called the Gita, or simply Gita, the Bhagavad Gita is an ancient Sanskrit text made up of 700 verses of Dharmic scripture. It takes the form of a conversation between the Pandava prince Arjuna and his guide Krishna, touching on a wide range of philosophical questions.
On a battlefield torn apart by war between kin, a troubled Arjuna turns to his charioteer Krishna for guidance. Through the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna teaches Arjuna the paths of devotion and the doctrine of selfless action. The essence and philosophical traditions of the Upanishads live on within the Bhagavad Gita, though the Gita blends dualism and theism, in contrast to the strict monism found in the Upanishads.
Numerous commentaries on the Bhagavad Gita have been written, each offering different perspectives. The earliest well-known one is Adi Shankara's commentary from the 8th century CE. Many scholars read the battlefield setting as an allegory for the moral and ethical struggles of human life. Several leaders of India's independence movement, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi among them, drew inspiration from the Gita's call to selflessness.
