A SHOOTING RPG WITH A DISTINCTIVE STAGE LAYOUT
Dream Star Monster Arcade is a shooting RPG built around an unusual stage design. Each battle takes place across islands that split the player's side from the enemy's, so you must intercept foes that fire at you or swoop through the sky. Push through many stages by making full use of item effects, the built-in stage features, and the permanent training menu, which lets you swap and upgrade your gear.
SHOOTING BATTLES AGAINST FIERCE MONSTERS
Enemy monsters sit on the opposite island, firing projectiles at you or flying overhead to launch melee strikes. Move your character to dodge incoming attacks, then stop and return fire at the enemy. Beyond basic shots, you can wipe out the monsters on each island by using in-stage upgrades that boost attack power and by collecting items the enemies drop to disrupt them.
A STAGE LAYOUT BUILT ON ISLANDS
The graphics feature fantasy island scenery, and a permanent training menu is available as well. The flow feels much like Archer's, except the stage is split down the middle of the screen. It's frustrating that you can never close the gap to the enemy, but defeated foes drop items such as tornadoes and bombs that you can use to hinder and attack them. My only concern is that the stage offers just three build elements, and the shot style never changes.
BOOST YOUR CHARACTER WITH GEAR AND FUNDS
Your character earns experience points during a stage and levels up, raising attack power, defense power, and the funds you collect. Each run resets this build, but as you advance you can find weapons like knives and axes to swap in or upgrade. The training menu spends funds to randomly raise your stats, and those gains are permanent, so steady training pays off and prepares you for tougher stages.
TIPS FOR EARLY-STAGE STRATEGY
The upgrade menu is locked at the start, so clear a stage to unlock it. Clearing a WAVE within a stage also grants a temporary boost to attack power, defense power, or collected funds. As long as the upgrade menu stays closed, it's wise to focus on either offense or defense.
MAKE THE MOST OF DROPPED ITEMS
Grab items while dodging enemy fire. Defeating an enemy in a stage has a chance to drop various items. Besides potions that restore stamina, some items summon tornadoes or rain bombs down on the enemy's island. Move your character to collect them while steering clear of enemy attacks, then stop and shoot while the enemy is recoiling from a hit.
