Core gameplay in Craft Warriors Frontier

You are an unnamed knight who arrives in Skyland, a land badly devastated by monsters. Your task is to restore it while defending everything you rebuild from enemy assaults.

Moving and acting in Craft Warriors Frontier is straightforward. You steer your character with the joystick on the left side of the screen, and you can rotate the camera by tapping the empty area on the right half. The virtual buttons on the right handle attacking, jumping, and switching units.

Every battle comes down to protecting your fortress and wiping out all enemies. If your fortress falls, you lose immediately, even if your character is still standing. Defeat carries a 10-minute penalty during which your fortress regenerates, and you cannot join any battles on your island while it does.

Characters

Craft Warriors Frontier starts you off with 3 characters: two 2-star characters, a knight and a light warrior, each with 125 health, and a white knight, which is a 3-star character with 150 health. You can use or upgrade whichever characters you like, and you can unlock higher-star characters by opening chests found in the game.

Character upgrade system

Characters can be upgraded with purple crystal blocks and a brief waiting period. Upgrades raise a character's level but not their star rating. Lower-star characters also cost fewer resources to upgrade than higher-star ones.

Keep in mind that star rating and level only boost maximum health, while attack power depends on your weapon. Even so, upgrading your characters is worthwhile. Craft Warriors Frontier has no direct blocking or dodging, so your character will often take hits from enemies.

Switching characters

Craft Warriors Frontier introduces a unique system called "units." You can freely change characters, weapons, and gear during combat. A unit is a set made up of a character, weapon, equipment, and skin. You can adjust your units in the "Unit" section at the top of the screen.

When you face a large group of monsters in combat, you can switch to a melee unit. When you need ranged attacks or want to cover your teammates with fire support, switch to a bow-and-arrow or bomb unit. Switching is easy: tap the virtual switch button (the icon with two circular arrows), then choose the character you need.

Making the most of units

Craft Warriors Frontier allows up to 5 units to switch between. Each unit has its own separate health pool, so you can swap to a fresh unit when your current one is running low and avoid defeat. In theory, the unit system can give you up to 5 times your character's maximum health.

Fortification building system

This is the most important mechanic in Craft Warriors Frontier and largely determines how quickly you grow stronger. The city sits at the center of your island, and you can spend gold to upgrade it. Like other upgrades, each one takes a set amount of time to finish, and higher city levels require more resources and longer waits.

Upgrading the city raises its health. At certain levels, upgrades also unlock important city features, such as crossbows for self-defense, green resource pools that automatically generate green crystals, and purple resource pools that automatically generate purple crystals.

Craft Warriors Frontier offers a remarkably inventive blend of real-time combat and base building. Although its combat is simple, its progression system is very deep.
