About Bad Parenting 1: Mr. Red Face
Bad Parenting 1: Mr. Red Face is a horror game released in August 2024 by 2002 Studio, a developer based in Vietnam. Since launch, it has drawn plenty of praise for its gripping storyline and unsettling visuals.
Story
The game draws its inspiration from Mr. Red Face, a fictional figure that parents often invent to keep their children in line. According to the legend, he visits at night, rewarding well-behaved kids and punishing the naughty ones. What began as a simple bedtime tale slowly turns frightening once Mr. Red Face appears in the real world.
You'll follow a young boy named Ron throughout the adventure. His father, Bruce, is unemployed and struggles with alcoholism, while his mother works hard and loves her son deeply. The story kicks off when Bruce and Ron's mother get into a fierce argument. Wanting to stay away from the tension, Ron is sent to his room to sleep. Bruce, meanwhile, keeps drinking and lashes out, smashing things around him. The situation reaches its peak when Bruce, in a rage, storms into Ron's room and strangles him.
Overcome with panic over what he has done, Bruce tries to hide the body and flees to a rundown motel in a remote area. The next morning, Ron's mother wakes up and discovers his body in the wardrobe. Ron's soul, left behind after death, becomes trapped in an endless world with no exit. The full truth only comes out when Ron finally finds his inner strength, enters his favorite toy, The Doll, and tells his story.
Hoping to ease his mother's grief and bring peace to his soul, Ron resolves to reveal his father's crime to her and point her toward the motel where Bruce is hiding. With that information, the police can track him down and hold him accountable for his actions.
Gameplay
Don't expect things to be as simple as the story suggests. You'll guide Ron through a nightmarish world, experiencing everything through the eyes of an innocent child. The terrifying fictional figure Mr. Red Face is, in fact, a metaphor for an abusive, drunken father.
Complete the tasks the game presents to uncover new plot details. Each finished objective reveals another piece of this heartbreaking story, adding depth to the tragedy.
The game pulls you into a frightening world where you must confront your darkest fears and piece together fragments of a cold, painful tragedy. Once you finish, you'll likely walk away with a horror experience that is both intense and hard to forget.
Graphics
The game uses 3D visuals inspired by 90s cartoons. This distinctive art style builds an eerie, unsettling atmosphere throughout, with details intentionally rendered in rough, unpolished shapes rather than crisp, sharp lines.
The fear intensifies as you experience everything from a first-person viewpoint in suffocatingly dark spaces. The only light comes from faint wall lamps, giving the feeling of watching an old VHS tape. This gives the game a deeply nostalgic yet chilling mood.
On the path toward the afterlife, Ron encounters other unfortunate children who lost their lives in similar tragedies, all victims of domestic violence. The game offers more than scares; it also delivers a powerful, thought-provoking lesson for every player.
